Wausau Trail Run

Registration Opens January 1, 2025

Located in central Wisconsin, the Wausau Trail Run takes place at Nine Mile County Forest.  This is a Friday evening run which begins as the sun is about to set (lights required).  With options of 5K, 10K, and Half Marathon routes, this run is sure to please all abilities on a combination of single track mountain bike and ski trails. Bring your lights and stay for the music, food and beer!

Maps for 2025 will be published in June. Distances are not exact due to winding trails. Though we try to get as close as possible, the courses may be a little shorter/longer.

Schedule

Friday July 25, 2025

12:00pm: Gates open. Runners are encouraged to carpool and park on Red Bud Road.  This is also when bikers will be arriving to set up for the weekend. Prior to 12:00 pm entrance will be for expo and staff only.

12:00 pm-6:00 pm: pre-riding/running of the course is open. The lap will be marked and ready to go (weather pending). Both bike and run participants may be on the course during this time so be aware of all participants and respect all competitors.

2:00 pm-6:00 pm: Packet pick-up for Wausau Trail Run.

7:00 pm: Half-Marathon, 10k, and 5k trail runs begin.

8:00 pm: Live Music and welcome gathering in the main expo. Stop by and meet old friends and new. Stay around to cheer on our finishers for the run!

9:00 pm: Awards for 5K & 10K. Must be present to receive award.

10:00 pm: Awards for Half-Marathon. Must be present to receive award.

11:30 pm-7:00 am: Courtesy quiet hours on the entire grounds. Please respect your neighbors getting some rest for the bike race day on Saturday.

ALL KIDS RACES (under 12) are on SATURDAY

12:00 pm Kocourek Kids Wausau Trail Run (online registration prior to race weekend and from 11:30-11:45 am race day, FREE Thanks to Kocourek Kids). Parents encouraged to participate as course marshals and spectators.

1:00 pm Kocourek Kids Wausau 24 events: 12 minute-short course and 24 minute-long course (online registration prior to race weekend and from 12:30-12:45 pm race day, FREE Thanks to Kocourek Kids). Parents encouraged to participate as course marshals and spectators.

Parking

Parking

Parking is free. We encourage carpooling and parking on Red Bud Road for runners. This is to ensure you do not get parked in as riders will be arriving to set up for the weekend as well.

Camping is available for those participating in Wausau 24 on Saturday/Sunday.  If this is you, refer to the camping section under Wausau 24 menu.

We encourage runners to stay in and enjoy Wausau for the weekend. Some hotel blocks will be arranged and posted here in the near future for those interested.

Rules

Permitted Course Runners

Only registered racers, credentialed media and event staff may run on the designated racecourse during the event. Spectators are allowed throughout the venue but must stay clear of the course. This also means no dogs on course.

Race Number Display

Racers must display their number on their front throughout the entire race.

Lighting

Only the Start/Finish area has lighting. ALL runners are REQUIRED to have at least 1 light source. Half Marathon runners are STRONGLY ENCOURAGED to have a second light source for both visibility and in case of emergency. It gets dark early under the forest canopy at Nine Mile where we are also away from city lights.

Pre-Race Meeting

The pre-race meeting will be on Friday at 6:45 pm near the Start. All participants must attend the pre-race meeting.

Starting procedure

Starting runners must be at the starting line PRIOR to 7:00 pm.

Finishing the Race

Each participant must cross the finish line to have their time and successful finish recorded. Failure to cross the finish line will result in a DNF (did not finish).

Awards

Awards to be given to 1st-3rd place, male and female in each race for age categories as follows:

17& under, 18-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60+

Must be present to receive Award. Live results are available on site.

Electronics

No listening devices with either earphones/ear buds or speakers are permitted on the course for safety reasons. Personal cell phones and GPS devices may be carried for navigational or emergency purposes.

Short Cutting

Shortcutting the course by any racer shall result in a disqualification of that racer.

Law Abiding

Federal, state and county laws and ordinances will be abided by at all times.

DOGS

Although dogs are allowed on-leash at the venue, NO DOGS are allowed on course.

FAQs

Will there be first aid available?  Yes, Wisconsin Mountain Bike Patrol is present the entire weekend and will be on course during the event. 

Will there be aid stations with water/nutrition? There will be water and nutrition available at Red Bud Road and Checkpoint Charlie. The 5k & 10K courses will only pass Red Bud Road at mile 1. Checkpoint Charlie is located at approximately mile 8 of the Half Marathon. Please do not throw nutrition wrappers on the ground. Remember: Leave No Trace.
